One of hip-hop’s most influential and celebrated groups, Arrested Development, will bring its electrifying energy to Rivers Casino Portsmouth. The live performance will take place on Friday, June 26, at 8 p.m., in The Event Center.
With a career spanning more than three decades, Arrested Development revolutionized hip-hop with a message of positivity, social consciousness, and cultural pride. Emerging in the early 1990s, the group stood apart with lyrics rooted in hope and awareness, reshaping the sound and direction of the genre.
The group made history as the first hip-hop artists to win the Grammy Award for “Best New Artist” — a distinction it still holds today. The ‘90s sensation also claimed the Grammy for “Best Rap Single” for “Tennessee,” the breakthrough prayer-like anthem that resonated deeply with listeners through its themes of inspiration and empowerment. The track was later recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll and ranked among VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the ‘90s.
Arrested Development’s debut album, “3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of…,” sold more than four million copies worldwide and produced other era-defining hits, including “Revolution,” "Mr. Wendal,” “People Everyday,” and “Zingalamaduni,” which earned a Grammy nomination and critical praise. Fans can expect to experience these beloved songs and other favorites that moved millions of records and helped shape the soundtrack of an entire generation.
Beyond chart-topping success, Arrested Development has long been recognized for its commitment to social impact. The group became the first African American artists to donate to Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress, and contributed half of the royalty earnings from “Mr. Wendal” to the National Coalition of the Homeless. The group’s work has also intersected with film. Director Spike Lee tapped the hip-hop icons to contribute music to his landmark movie Malcolm X, further cementing their cultural impact.
Widely known for delivering uplifting, high-energy performances, Arrested Development continues to tour globally, selling out venues across the world. In 2019, the group received the Black Music Honors Award in recognition of its enduring contribution to African American music.
Tickets for Arrested Development start at $19 and are available now at RiversCasino.com/Portsmouth. Guests must be 21 years of age or older.
